Injection (Liquid/Foam Sclerotherapy)
Spider veins and reticular (blue) veins are treated by injection (sclerotherapy). This is performed in our clinic with a very small needle without the need for anaesthetic (freezing).
The sclerosing agent is injected directly into the vein using a very small needle. Sclerosing agents cause the vein to become inflamed, which causes it to eventually fade away. The blood in this vein then redistributes to a healthier vein.
After the injections, a compression bandage or stocking is applied. This prevents bruising and helps speed up the effect of the sclerosant.
Very small veins are treated with liquid sclerosant, medium sized veins often respond best to a “foam” sclerosant.

Injection (Sclerotherapy) Procedure
Treated veins usually disappear within a few weeks, occasionally within a few months.
A sclerotherapy session normally involves multiple injections. Best results are usually obtained with multiple sessions performed over a few months.
Common side effects of sclerotherapy include :
- Temporary inflammation (redness) of the treated area (usually lasting 2-3 days)
- “Staining” in the treated area (often lasting 2-8 weeks )
(permanent staining may occur in 2-4% of cases)
